Our week in pictures (March 15-21): or, Spring Break!

Monday of this week was spend driving home from Provo, doing laundry and packing up to head back out on the road! No time for pictures today.

Tuesday:

The kids were out of school for Spring Break this week, so we wanted to head to parts further south, and warmer! We didn't have a real clear idea of where we were going, or what we were going to do, but we knew we were going to have fun.

Madeleine and Isaac were up for the car ride, but mostly were ready to watch a movie.

Benjamin played his DS from the moment we got in the car till we parked at our hotel room. This is not an exaggeration!

We stayed in St. George that night, and were so happy to be where it was warm.

Wednesday:

We headed out to Zion National Park to do some exploring.

Madeleine took this picture for us. Adam told her she had to have us, and the sign in the picture, so she did a pretty good job!

We kept driving southeast, past Jacob Lake (which had three feet of snow, so it did not meet our requirements of being warmer than home!)

But as we came out of the mountain, and went around a bend, we saw this amazing sight. Obviously,it's not so amazing in the picture. These are the Vermillion cliffs. It was so beautiful to see these bright red cliffs, and this huge expanse of flat, almost green land together. All I could say was "wow."

Thursday:

Thursday morning found us in Flagstaff, AZ. The night before I spent an hour driving Andrew up and down the streets to try and get him to sleep. That was after spending two hours in the hotel room trying to calm him down. He started to develop a fever and cough on Tuesday night, so he was sort of on the miserable side. His little cry was so hoarse and pathetic, and nothing I could do would calm him down. It was sad for everyone. Finally, around 11:00 pm he settled down and slept--for about an hour! It was not a good night for us.

So we got up, and headed to the Grand Canyon! Note the snow--still not any warmer than home! Right after this picture was taken, Madeleine was severely chastised for sticking her head past the railing. There's nothing like staring directly down a huge cliff to show how much you love your children by yelling at them!

It was sort of chilly, and the kids were sort of tired. Isaac also was developing a cold, and probably hadn't had a nap in a week, so he was all over the place also. We didn't spend a lot of time at the park. Adam and I could have spent a lot more time, but the kids were spent.

We went to the cafeteria for some lunch, which cheered everyone up.

We rode the shuttle bus around to different spots, and it was pretty much the high light for Isaac. He's a sucker for public transportation.

That night, we crossed the river again at Hoover Dam. The kids were pretty impressed. Adam said it was the high light of his trip.

The bridge they are building to bypass the dam is almost finished. It is an amazing feat of engineering.

Friday:

We woke up Friday morning ready for home. It had been a lot of driving, and we'd seen a lot of country, but we were ready. Isaac hadn't taken a nap for a long time--probably since last week. And since there was nothing to look at on the way home, he did what he always does when we're driving and he wants to sleep: He puts his blanket on his head and falls asleep.

This was the only "fat free" item we ate the entire trip.

Saturday:

Andrew was so wiped out from all the traveling, he took a long, three hour nap Saturday afternoon.

Sunday:

I have no picture for this day. It was just a typical Sunday: wrestling match at church, waffles for dinner, lazy afternoon, and visiting Grandma and Grandpa Hansen.
